Life is one big road with lots of signs according to Bob Marley. Sometimes those signs will get you in a jam and have you running late for your flight. Don’t fret as you have a few options to get you onto another flight if it’s available.
A little bit of the airlines policies are to arrive to the gate at least 2 hours before departure for domestic flights and 3 hours before departure for international flights. We all know that poop happens which can cause you to miss your flight.
1st thing, don’t panic, simply take a few deep breaths and woo-sah.
If you’re still en route to the airport and realize you will definitely miss your flight then call the airline and let them to know. They will more than likely tell you to still go to the airport or they might re-book you on another flight. If you’re already at the airport and miss your flight, politely ask the ticket agent or gate agent about their flat tire rule. Most airlines will tell you that they don’t have a flat tire rule so they can charge you extra but sometimes they will be helpful.
Keep in mind that your ticket is probably non refundable which comes with fees and penalties. Usually this means the airlines can charge you a change fee plus the difference if the fare is higher.
Just kindly explain why you missed your flight and ask can you be placed on the next flight out. Now this will give you at least 3 different options depending on the mood of the agent and the availability of the next flight.
Option 1: If the availability is full, some airlines will place you on standby for the next flight with no extra fee.
Option 2: They can simply confirm you a seat on the next flight with no fee.
Option 3: Another option that may used is to charge a small same day confirmed fee of $50 to $75.
The key is to get on the agents good side, remain calm, be honest and always be kind. It does nobody any good to curse, scream and behave rudely. If you feel like the agent hasn’t been helpful then kindly ask to speak with their supervisor for help.
Please note these options are strictly only for domestic flights and not for international flights. International flights are more expensive and fall under a different set of rules. Also most airlines don’t allow standby on these flights so either arrive 3 to 4 hours earlier or expect to pay hefty fees for missing it.
Accidents happen so to be prepared for any type of flight mishaps, always purchase travel insurance to help alleviate the cost.
