You’ve been dreaming about this vacation for months. Everything is planned down to the last detail. Nothing could go wrong… right? Take it from me – even the most meticulously planned trip can go awry due to unexpected crises. Sometimes, those mishaps come from the most unexpected places, despite your careful planning. I’m all about making travel as smooth as possible for you, so I’ve compiled a list of rookie travel mistakes to avoid! It’s the next best thing to let me plan your vacation for you.
1) Do You Need All Those Shoes?
Yes, you love all your shoes – but do you need to bring every pair? Be realistic about what you’re packing. Aim for a capsule wardrobe and leave room in your luggage for all the fabulous new things you will buy.
2) Alert Your Bank
Few things are more frustrating than having your card declined when trying to pay for dinner because the bank suspects fraud. Let your bank know you’ll be traveling and where you’ll avoid this issue.
3) Keep Important Things with You
If your luggage decides to go off on an adventure without you, keep essential items (including a change of clothes) in your carry-on. Important items, such as medication, passport, etc., should be in your handbag or personal item.
4) Leave Time for Naps
We know you’re excited and want to see everything, but vacation should also be about relaxation. If you’re running from one activity to the next without time to breathe, you’ll return home more exhausted than when you left! Plan for some downtime, whether for resting or spontaneous fun.
5) Beware Short Layovers
Short layovers might seem clever to minimize airport wait time, but if your first flight is delayed, you’ll run across the airport and possibly miss your connection. Opt for longer layovers to ensure a smoother journey.
6) Don’t Be THAT Tourist
English is common, but don’t expect everyone to speak it. Learn a few phrases before you go, download a language app (Google Translate is your bestie), and make an effort. It shows respect and can enhance your travel experience.
7) Educate Yourself
Learning local rules and customs before arriving in a new place is common courtesy and sense. A quick online search can help you avoid offending locals or facing fines. Don’t blame us if you get a $1,000 fine for chewing gum in Singapore!
8) Talk to the Locals
Want to know the best restaurants or hidden gems? Talk to the locals. They’ll know all the secret treasures that you might miss if you rely solely on guidebooks.
9) Spread Your Cash Around
Don’t carry all your money in one place. If heaven forbid, something happens and you lose a stash of cash, you’ll have backup funds stored elsewhere in your luggage or hotel room.
10) Just Buy the Travel Insurance
Everyone tries to save money, but don’t skimp on travel insurance. If something goes wrong, travel insurance can make the difference between enjoying your trip and figuring out how to get home. The peace of mind is worth the few extra bucks.
Don’t let minor problems ruin an otherwise incredible vacation! By doing a little planning ahead, you’ll be able to enjoy a relaxing getaway. Of course, you could always let me handle the planning for you. Contact me at [email protected], and let’s make your dream trip a reality.
